Utilize Caution When Choosing a Hostel or Hotel

The determining factor in booking a hostel or hotel truly narrows down to the cost of staying in a room or bed overnight for a study abroad student.  However, students are highly encouraged to conduct some research on the hostel or hotel before booking a room as they can be managed by careless individuals.  Conducting very little to no research could result in students sleeping in a bed that is worn down or has bugs, dirty sheets, and even discover that their room has been given away to another traveler.  This blog post is not intended to discourage students from traveling while abroad, but make them aware of potential risks in which they could face.  If a student does confront the situation of their room being given away then the student should be sure to get their deposit back right away if they paid one. Often times at night, depending on how many hostels or hotels are in the student’s area, they can barter a bed or room at a nearby hostel for a relatively cheap price.  During the process of conducting research one should also examine the stability of the neighborhood in which the hostel is in.  There are hazards outside of the hostel or hotel, such as pick pocketers, just as there are potential problems within them.  In order be proactive and avoid these risks associated with hostels and hotels I have found a substantial amount of success by utilizing the following websites:  www.hostelworld.com, www.hostels.com/europe, www.hosteleurope.com/, http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/tips/1198hostels.htm, and http://www.famoushostels.com/hostel-reviews.  The linked websites should answer most of the questions a study abroad student will have but please leave a comment below if you have any further questions or concerns.  Study abroad students do not want to have a trip of a lifetime to be ruined because of problems associated with a hostel or hotel.
