Customs before Departure and upon Home Arrival

Going through Customs is a long and tedious process as most students just want to see family and friends immediately after the planes tires hit the ground in their home country.  Study abroad students will quickly discover that their peers who are prepared to go through Customs will efficiently speed through the process in comparison to those who are not.  In order to be better organized to go through Customs students should take the initiative of either going to a Customs Office early, or bring receipts of the items in which they will bring on their trip to the airport before they depart to their international country of study.  Students could potentially pay a duty after arrival home on all products which are not registered before they go abroad.  International students will receive a duty free certificate that shows Customs that the item was purchased before departure to the foreign country.  However, all items such as jewelry, computers, and cameras which are purchased overseas, or even gifts from others, must be included on a Customs declaration form because a duty could be imposed on them.  If students wish to go through Customs quickly then they should fill this form out on their flight home in order to avoid attempting to complete it in line and potentially being told to wait longer than necessary.  On the declaration form students will be required to include the prices they paid for the item with taxes; but if they add a gift to the declaration then they should list the present at market price.  The last thing a student will want to do after arrival home is wait in Customs for hours on end, so one should take all the necessary steps to make this process as painless as possible.
