International students will quickly discover that one of the greatest and irreplaceable resources in which they encompass are their international study advisers. Study abroad students should make a conscious effort to get to know their study abroad advisers, both domestic and international, as well as possible because they can become the linchpin in a successful and unsuccessful experience. These advisers are in the position to help study abroad students because they have a wealth of international experience and knowledge on their resumes. However, students should not take advantage of their advisers by being lazy and incompetent, but typically international counselors have answers to nearly every aspect of the overseas experience. Some situations in which my adviser has answered critical questions include visa information, student housing, course registration, class credit systems, paperwork, and travel topics. I found that if my adviser was not capable of answering my question then she could quickly network with others, and get in contact with an individual which knew the answer to my inquiry in an efficient amount of time. I truly would be lost and stressed if I did not have my advisers help. Nonetheless, advisers are a valuable medium to the international world as beginner study abroad students will more than likely struggle on their own. Students should also sustain consistent contact with their adviser while overseas in order to stay informed of homeland and international news or events. Advisers are a valuable resource regardless of whether students utilize them minimally or to the fullest, as they can truly make the study experience more enjoyable for their students.
